Start of Scholarship System for Young Researchers in Asia
Since last year, as the leader of gastrointestinal science in Asia, the JGA started a scholarship system for young researchers in Asia. The scholarship aims to provide support to young researchers wishing to visit Japan, encourage their participation in the annual IGICS, which is the JGA’s Keynote Program, and as a result, many young researchers gathered for the 6th IGICS in Tokyo this year. When IGICS was first launched, there were six participating countries; Korea, China, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Japan. This increased to eight countries with the participation of Singapore and Malaysia last year. We hope to continue our efforts to further widen this circle. Next year, the annual IGICS will be held in Fukushima based on the theme “Gastrointestinal Function and Diseases”. We welcome presentations on themes other than this, and look forward to many applications from Japan as well.

Since our tie-up with the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), our partnership has been progressing smoothly. We expect this alliance to grow even stronger with the appointment of Shinichi Takahashi, vice chairperson of the International Exchange Committee and JGA director, as the Governor of the ACG. In the future, we are planning to work with the ACG in our commitment to foster young gastroenterologists in Asia, and particularly establish a system for receiving students from abroad to study in Japan.

We will do our best to gain more benefits for us and the expansion of both our associations by this affiliate program with the ACG. Our aim as the JGA is to help increase of the ACG members and enhance our influence on the relationship between JGA and ACG. Should you wish to become an ACG International Member and need the letter of support by the ACG members / fellows, please feel free to contact the JGA secretariat.
